What is Peaceful Life Mode in Village in the Shade?
Peaceful Life Mode is NIS America’s name for the safer play option at Kagatsu Village. The publisher states you can live there “safely and securely, without being able to break the code” that governs the town. That is the core promise: the life-sim half of Village in the Shade without deliberately walking into rule-breaking horror.
Western PC players will also see Village in the Sunshine Mode in official Steam community announcements—for example Patch 1.20 farmland expansion and Patch 1.30 birthday events list separate prerequisites for Village in the Shade Mode versus Village in the Sunshine Mode. Treat Sunshine = Peaceful unless a future patch renames the UI again.

How does Sunshine mode differ from Village in the Shade Mode?
Both modes share the same handcrafted village, seasons, and farming backbone described on NIS America’s English page. The split is player agency around the code:
| Topic | Village in the Shade Mode (standard) | Village in the Sunshine / Peaceful mode |
|---|---|---|
| Breaking village rules | Possible; tied to optional frightening content and deeper mystery | Disabled by design—you cannot trigger code violations |
| Night tension | Curfew and night exploration matter for standard progression (/rules/night-exploration/) | No rule-breaking night paths; atmosphere may still feel quiet or uncanny in places |
| Story emphasis | Full mystery route; marketing invites you to “discover the truth at your own risk” on Steam | Life-sim first; developer says it lacks standard mode’s dedicated story finale structure |
| Farm & social systems | Yes | Yes—patches add livestock, farmland, furniture, and tools to both with different story gates |
Standard mode is the right default if you want the Yomawari-team tone with countryside contrast. Sunshine mode is the honest opt-out for players who only want crops, festivals, and neighbors—see /guides/is-it-scary/ for content context without spoilers.
Can you change modes after you start?
Plan mode choice before you invest ten in-game days. Developer Mizogami Yuu (planner/game designer) told 4Gamers in July 2026 that players cannot freely switch mid-save; the decision happens when the save is created. Neither NIS America nor Steam patch notes describe converting an existing Shade save into Sunshine or the reverse.
Practical approach:
- Pick Sunshine on save slot A if you might dislike night pressure.
- Pick Shade on save slot B if you later want the fuller route—Patch 1.09 added multiple rolling backups per slot for saves created after that update.
Does Peaceful mode still give you the full farm and social game?
Official marketing does not wall off farming behind standard mode. NIS America lists tillage, animal husbandry, fishing, hunting, homestead decorating, and villager relationships for the title as a whole. Steam’s free-update posts reinforce that reading: Silkie chickens, mallards, fluffy cows, spotted goats, furniture catalog, extra farmland, seeder tool, and plumbing furniture all list unlock conditions for both modes—only the story trigger names change (for example Tobari/hokora requests in Shade versus Nago residency milestones in Sunshine).

What Sunshine does trim is the optional horror pathway tied to breaking /rules/village-rules/. You should not expect the same midnight errands, yokai-adjacent encounters, or rule-violation scenes that standard players chase on purpose. Developer comments in the 4Gamers piece state Sunshine removes “terrifying events” tied to code-breaking and that the team did not design bad endings—standard players also avoid worst outcomes if they simply follow the code.
Social depth still exists: interviews describe a closed village that slowly accepts an outsider through labor and trust—see /villagers/rin/ and /guides/marriage-romance/ for systems that unlock later. Sunshine players in preview reports still felt occasional unease from setting alone; that is atmosphere, not jump-scare chapters.
Story and endings (spoiler-free, developer-sourced)
Mizogami told 4Gamers Sunshine mode includes some plot, but the mode targets players who mainly want life simulation rather than a story-focused finale like standard mode’s structure. She also clarified the product still has a narrative ending point, yet the game does not force quit afterward—you can keep living in Kagatsu. We treat finer scene lists as not confirmed until we finish both modes ourselves.
Which mode should you choose?
Use intent, not bravado:
- Pick Village in the Sunshine / Peaceful Life if you refuse horror-adjacent content, you are new to farming sims and only want cozy loops, or you are playing alongside someone who needs a guaranteed safe experience. Pair with /guides/beginner-guide/ for day-one pacing.
- Pick Village in the Shade Mode if you bought the game for rural horror contrast, you accept Steam’s Cartoon Blood and Violence / Horror Themes / Themes of Suicide content descriptors, and you want optional night progression (/rules/night-exploration/).
- Run two saves if you are curious but cautious—there is no mid-save switch, but parallel files cost nothing except time.
If you are unsure after reading this page, default to Sunshine for your first season, then start a Shade save once you know the daytime loops.
